DENSITY

Density is a measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume.

Density is generally measured in tonnes per cubic metre (t/m³). This is the same as grams per cubic centimetre, or kilograms per litre (1 litre = 1000 cm³).

A cubic metre of air weighs 1.3kg

A cubic metre of water weighs 1 tonne

​

A litre of water weighs 1 kilogram

​

A cubic metre of aluminium weighs 2.7 tonnes

​

500cm3 of concrete weighs 1.2kg

​

If you filled a 1 litre compaction mould with gold, you’d have 19.3kg of gold.

 

If your 2.4 litre mould has a volume of 2398cm³, and after you finish your compaction, it has 5159g of soil in it, the wet density is worked out below:
